Hemangioma Treatment
A hemangioma is a visible red birthmark that is present at birth or develops by the second week after birth. It has a rubbery consistency and appears as a bump on the skin. Most appear on the face, head, back or chest, but they can present anywhere on the body. Many hemangiomas fade over time; those in certain locations may require general/medical dermatology treatment. Spectrum Dermatology of Atlanta offers hemangioma treatment at our Alpharetta clinic.
Hemangiomas are made of a clump of extra blood vessels in the skin. They can grow and then fade away over time. Since many do, they are typically monitored by your doctor but left alone. If they begin causing problems, such as bleeding, infection or growth that interferes with seeing, breathing or other bodily functions, hemangiomas require treatment by a medical professional.
Treatment and Care of Hemangioma “Strawberry” Birthmarks
Dr. Susan Spitzler and Dr. Emma Murad are experienced dermatologists who are familiar with hemangiomas. They can monitor this birthmark on your child and recommend if any action is needed. If problems develop, or the hemangioma is located in an area of the body that causes problems, such as near an eye that affects the eyelid function, they can perform treatments to eliminate the hemangioma.
Care must be taken with hemangiomas due to the presence of blood vessels. Treatments typically begin with beta-blockers or corticosteroid medications. These can be injected or applied directly to the skin.
Dr. Spitzler and Dr. Murad will prepare a custom treatment plan for your child that always begins with the least invasive measures possible. That may begin with a “watch and see” approach that continues for some time unless complications develop. You can speak with them about your concerns in a consultation at our clinic.
